Why it works
A place with a sense of place.
Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa is a stone building at the main entrance to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, in south-eastern Kenya — a sanctuary of its own alongside Tsavo, 400 km from Nairobi and 200 km from Mombasa. It is a six-hour drive from Nairobi and three from Mombasa on tarmac roads, or an hour by private charter to the hotel's own airstrip. There are 60 standard rooms of 21 m² and two suites of 56 m², all with ensuite bathrooms and their own private viewing balcony. Rooms look out over the gardens and the free-form swimming pool, and some have a view of the waterhole; the suites face the game park and have a separate lounge.
Between game drives there is the pool, the Afya Bora Spa with massages, facials and body treatments, and the Chala Restaurant, which serves buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with live cooking counters and salads made from the resort's own vegetable and herb garden. The Taita Hills Bar & Lounge handles the rest of the evening. The lodge also keeps a small museum of First World War memorabilia from Taita Taveta County, and dinner can be taken out in the bush at Kudu Point, the highest spot in the sanctuary, where Mount Kilimanjaro appears when the weather allows.
We recommend accommodation only when it fits the route, the season, your pace and the value you expect.
