Mutara Camp

Why it works

A place with a sense of place.

Mutara Camp is the only guest accommodation on the 20,000-acre Mutara Conservancy, next door to Ol Pejeta. There are 15 tents, and the camp keeps it at that. Each one has an ensuite bathroom, a private balcony and a separate living area that converts into two single beds for children; the family tent is two tents joined by a walking deck, one with a double bed and the other with twins. In the tents there is an in-room safe, a mini bar, a tea and coffee station, high-pressure showers, a hairdryer, an electric blanket and Wi-Fi, with Cinnabar Green soaps and shampoos.

The restaurant seats 35 and the bar lounge is separate from it; the kitchen works from set menus, or builds a menu around what guests ask for. Meals also go out into the bush — bush dinner, bush breakfast, picnic lunch, a barbecue by the dam, sundowners. There is an infinity pool looking out over the conservancy, and for a massage the beds are brought out onto your own deck. Guests can drive in both Mutara and Ol Pejeta on the same conservancy fee, which puts the last two northern white rhinos, lion tracking, the K9 anti-poaching unit and guided nature walks within reach; there is also a 5 to 7 km running route across the Ol Pejeta plains.
