Mara Intrepids Camp

Why it works

A place with a sense of place.

Mara Intrepids Camp overlooks the Talek River, at the point where the four game-viewing areas of the Masai Mara meet. The tents stand on shady raised platforms facing the river, each one about 26 square metres and furnished in the style of the old safaris, with four-poster beds and reproduction furniture. Each has a queen-size bed or two twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and flush toilet, a balcony, a minibar, bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer and tea and coffee making. Single, double, twin and triple tents are available. The camp has its own airstrip, a three-minute drive away and a 45-minute flight from Nairobi.

Game drives go out three times a day in open-sided jeeps with gold-certified guides, and the game viewing and the birding hold up all year round. Children have the Adventurers' Club, run by Maasai naturalists who know the plants, the wildlife and the survival skills of the bush. Beyond that the camp arranges hot air balloon rides at sunrise, at extra cost, bush breakfasts and dinners out in the reserve, sundowners around a campfire within sight of the game, and photographic safaris. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas.
