Amboseli Discovery Camp

Amboseli Discovery Camp sits on the edge of Amboseli National Park, in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, and every tent looks out at the mountain. There are 12 self-contained Hemingway-style safari tents, each one under a traditional African thatched roof that keeps the equatorial heat out, and each with a covered veranda furnished with classic safari chairs and a table. Alongside the tents there are three log cabins: two of them hold three separate rooms with a queen bed, en-suite bathroom and a private veranda facing Kilimanjaro, and the third is a family cabin with three bedrooms — two queen beds and two singles — that sleeps six, with a living room, a small dining room and a kitchen with full-sized appliances.

The restaurant is open-sided, set under a makuti roof, and looks over a busy waterhole where elephants, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and giraffes come and go; the fruit and vegetables are bought from small family farms nearby, and special dietary requirements are handled if you say so when booking. There is a swimming pool with the same view of the mountain, a bar, and a lounge built on a raised platform for watching the plains. The camp runs game drives into the park, walking safaris with Maasai guides, bead-making sessions with Maasai women and visits to the village of Enkongu Narok, and can pick guests up in Nairobi, at the Emali SGR station or at the Tanzanian border.
