Alama Mara Camp

Alama Mara Camp is a small camp on the bank of a brook, looking out over the plains of the Maasai Mara — alama is the Swahili word for a mark. There are ten permanent tented rooms — single, double, twin, triple and family — and all of them face the reserve. The canvas rolls up so the room opens straight onto a wide viewing deck, and the walls are built from sedimentary rock collected nearby, which keeps the temperature steady inside. Each tent has its own deck with a standalone jacuzzi turned towards the Mara, and the bathrooms have the same view over the plains. The rooms have Wi-Fi, a safe, a mini fridge, a kettle, a hairdryer and a telephone.

There is a swimming pool for the hours between drives, and the restaurant looks over the plains: the menus are à la carte and built around what the camp's own farm produces, and special meals — gluten free, vegetarian, vegan — are made on request. Game drives go out morning and late afternoon, or all day with a picnic lunch, in 4x4 jeeps with the camp's guides; hot-air balloon flights can be arranged at extra cost and depend on the weather. There are also nature walks, visits to a Maasai village and bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and one sundowner is included in the stay. Keekorok airstrip is about 45 minutes' flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, two hours from Mombasa, or five and a half hours by road.
