The voyage

What these days hold

Not every Komodo day starts before dawn. You leave Labuan Bajo after lunch, climb tiny Kelor for its view over the strait, and take your first snorkel off its beach. Then the boat follows the Menjerite coast as the rock turns copper, and anchors off Kalong Island for sunset. As the colour fades, thousands of flying foxes lift from the mangroves and stream across the sky. You are back after dark, salt-skinned, in time for dinner in town.

  • Kelor's summit view and its easy, fish-rich first snorkel
  • The Menjerite coast at golden hour, red rock holding the light
  • Sunset watched from your own deck, engine off
  • Thousands of flying foxes streaming from Kalong Island at dusk
  • A private boat for up to six — linger wherever the light is best
  • Back at the harbour by 19:30, in time for dinner in town

Classic from $460per boat · up to 6 guests
Luxury from $890per boat · up to 6 guests
Classic uses a fast open boat with a shaded deck — the right tool for a warm afternoon, with the breeze doing the air-conditioning. Luxury runs on an enclosed speedboat with cushioned seating, a bathroom and a drier, smoother ride home after dark, while the forward deck still gives you an open view for the sunset and the bats.

Hour by hour

The itinerary

  1. 14:00

    Out of the harbour

You board at Labuan Bajo harbour after lunch, while the light is still high and hard. The boat runs out of the bay, past moored phinisi and fishing platforms, and the town falls away quickly. It is a short crossing to Kelor. Use it to settle in: cold water, fresh fruit, a shaded seat with the breeze coming over the bow. The crew will already have picked the evening's anchorage off Kalong, judged on the day's wind and swell.

  2. 14:45

Kelor: a short climb and a first swim

Kelor is a tiny green islet with a hill and a curve of pale beach — from the summit it looks almost too neat to be real. The climb is short but genuinely steep: fifteen minutes of loose path to a view over the strait. Then the reward. The reef just off the beach is one of the best first snorkels in the area — shallow, clear, busy with small fish. Stay in as long as you like; the boat waits for you, not the other way round.

  3. 16:30

    Down the Menjerite coast

The boat takes the Menjerite coastline slowly, close in, as the afternoon softens. This is red-rock country: cliffs and folded ridges that hold the low sun and turn copper at golden hour. There is nothing to do here but watch, and the hour asks nothing more of you. The crew brings round cold drinks and fruit while the light does its work. Keep a camera to hand — on this stretch, the hour before sunset is the best hour of the day.

  4. 17:30

    Sunset at anchor

The boat drops anchor off Kalong Island while the sun is still up, and the crew cuts the engine. What follows needs no commentary: the sun lowering behind the islands and melting, orange and unhurried, into the sea. The water goes to brass, then rose. There is no jostling for a rail here — this deck is yours alone. Cold drink in hand, bow pointed west, you simply wait for the sky to change.

  5. 18:15

    The liftoff

As the last colour drains from the horizon, the mangroves of Kalong begin to stir. Flying foxes — large fruit bats — lift off in ones and twos, then in long streams, heading out to feed for the night. Most evenings the flight runs for twenty minutes or more, thousands of animals crossing a pastel sky, close enough to hear the beat of wings. It is one of the park's most dependable spectacles, and one of its least crowded.

  6. 18:45

    Home after dark

The run back to Labuan Bajo is a different sea: dark water, a pastel afterglow fading on the horizon, the lights of the town rising ahead. Most guests are quiet on this leg — the evening tends to do that. You step off at the harbour around 19:30, within easy reach of the town's restaurants. If you would like a table booked for dinner, tell us when you reserve and we will take care of it.
