The voyage

What these days hold

Padar's saddle viewpoint — three curved bays in one frame — is the most photographed climb in Komodo National Park, and the crowds prove it. So we go before them. Your boat leaves Labuan Bajo in the dark, you climb by torchlight, and you watch the island turn from grey to gold with the ridge almost to yourselves. Then a swim in a quiet cove, fruit and coffee on deck, and home before midday. Private boat, private pace, from the first line of light.

  • Padar's saddle viewpoint at dawn, the quietest hour on the trail
  • Three curved bays turning from grey to gold beneath you
  • A private boat for up to six — your route, your pace
  • A swim and snorkel in a quiet cove after the climb
  • Fresh fruit and good coffee served on deck on the way home
  • Back in Labuan Bajo by late morning, with the afternoon free

Hour by hour

The itinerary

  1. 04:30

Leave the harbour in the dark

Labuan Bajo is still asleep when you step aboard. The harbour lights slide behind you and the boat runs out through the dark, engine steady, stars out if the night is clear. There is coffee, and there are blankets; most guests doze. The crossing to Padar takes a little over an hour, timed so you land at the foot of the trail before the sky begins to pale. Your boat, your schedule — no queue at the jetty.

  2. 05:45

    The climb to the saddle

You land by torchlight and start up the steps while the sky is still ink. The trail to the saddle viewpoint takes 30 to 45 minutes: steep steps at first, then an open ridge where the grass brushes your ankles. Take it slowly; your guide sets the pace and carries the water. Sunrise is the quietest hour on Padar — most day boats arrive long after. Below you, the three curved bays begin to take shape in grey.

  3. 06:15

    First light over three bays

The saddle looks out over three curved bays, each a different arc of sand, and at first light the whole island turns from grey to rust to gold. A dramatic dawn sky does most of the work: cloud banks catch colour long before the sun clears the horizon. Stay as long as you like — there is no group schedule to keep. Walk a little higher along the ridge trail for the wider frame, one golden, empty bay laid out below you.

  4. 07:45

    A cove to yourselves

Back on board, the boat moves round to a quiet cove nearby and drops anchor in calm, clear water. This is the swim you earned on the steps: slide off the stern, float, rinse away the trail dust. Water in the park sits at 25 to 29 degrees all year, so nobody hurries out. Snorkel gear is on board if you would rather look under the surface than simply cool off, and the crew keeps watch from the deck.

  5. 09:00

    Breakfast on deck

Breakfast is laid out while you dry off: papaya, pineapple, banana, watermelon — whatever the market had that morning — with proper coffee and tea. The sun is fully up now and the sea between the islands is at its best colour. The boat begins the run home at an easy pace, and you eat with Padar shrinking behind you. If you want one last swim stop on the way, say the word; the route is yours.

  6. 11:30

    Back by late morning

You step off at Labuan Bajo harbour before midday, with the whole afternoon still ahead of you. That is what the early start buys you: sunrise on the saddle, a swim, breakfast at sea, and home before most boats have even reached Padar. If you would like us to fill the rest of the day — a table booked in town, a visit to Batu Cermin cave, an onward transfer — tell us when you book and we will arrange it.
