The voyage

What these days hold

Three days and two nights on a Luxury phinisi crewed for two. You climb Padar in the dark and have the saddle viewpoint to yourselves at dawn, lunch on a private sandbar at Taka Makassar, walk with a ranger among the dragons of Loh Liang, and drift over the reef at Manta Point. Evenings are dinner on deck at anchor, somewhere quiet, with nothing on the horizon but the masts. The route bends to whatever the two of you want.

  • A whole Luxury phinisi for two — no other guests, ever
  • Padar's saddle viewpoint at dawn, before the day fleet arrives
  • A private lunch laid on the Taka Makassar sandbar
  • Ranger-guided dragon walk at Loh Liang
  • A slow two-person drift over Manta Point
  • Dinners on deck at anchor, in bays without another boat

Luxury from $5,800for two · private phinisi
A Luxury phinisi is a traditional two-masted wooden sailing boat refitted for comfort: an ensuite cabin, a chef who cooks to your tastes, and a deck lounge made for long evenings at anchor. On this trip it carries only the two of you and its crew, so every landing, meal and detour is decided between you and the captain.

The itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Board and slip away

We meet you at your hotel or straight off the Bali flight and bring you to Labuan Bajo harbour, where the phinisi waits with cold towels and the first lunch already underway. The afternoon eases you in: a snorkel at Kelor, a tiny islet with clear water and a short steep climb if you feel like the view. At dusk we sit off Kalong Island as thousands of flying foxes lift into a violet sky between the two masts. Then dinner on deck at anchor near Padar, positioned for tomorrow's dawn.

  2. Day 2

Padar at dawn, mantas, a sandbar to yourselves

You are on the trail before first light, coffee in hand, and at the saddle viewpoint while the sky is still turning — three curved bays below and, most mornings, nobody else for half an hour. Breakfast is back on deck as the first day boats arrive behind you. Mid-morning you drift at Karang Makassar, where reef mantas come to be cleaned; a turtle often glides past for good measure. Lunch is laid on Taka Makassar, a crescent of white sand you share with no one, and the afternoon closes with a swim and a long sunset at anchor.

  3. Day 3

Dragons, one last bay, and home

Dragons first, while the air is still cool and they are most likely on the move. A ranger walks you through the dry grass at Loh Liang on Komodo island — the walks are guided by rule, and the rangers know where the animals rest. Back aboard, the phinisi turns for home past a scatter of green lagoons; there is time for one last swim in a quiet bay the crew keeps for final mornings. Lunch on deck, harbour by mid-afternoon, and a car waiting to take you to the airport or your hotel.

Good to know

  • From USD 5,800 for two on a private Luxury phinisi; the final quote depends on season.
  • Dry season is May–October; the green season (November–March) brings short storms and the best manta months, December–March. Sightings are never guaranteed.
  • The Padar dawn trek takes 30–45 minutes up steep steps — bring proper shoes and a light layer for the early start.
  • Ranger-guided walks are mandatory with the dragons; keep your distance and never touch or feed wildlife.
  • Celebrating something particular? Tell us when you enquire — the chef likes notice.
