The voyage

What these days hold

Five days and four nights aboard a private Luxury phinisi, with the whole of Komodo National Park to work through slowly. You take in the classics — Padar at first light, Pink Beach, the manta drift at Karang Makassar — then keep going where the day fleet turns back: the northern pinnacles off Gili Lawa, and the wilder south around Loh Sera and Manta Alley. Ensuite cabins, a chef, and a crew who adjust the route to the sea and to you.

  • Four nights at anchor in bays the day fleet never reaches
  • Padar's saddle viewpoint at sunrise, before the first boats arrive
  • The long drift over Karang Makassar's cleaning station
  • Walking out among the Loh Liang dragons with a park ranger
  • Snorkelling over the northern pinnacles of Castle Rock and Crystal Rock
  • The wilder south of the park: Loh Sera and the Manta Alley area

Luxury from $11,500per boat · up to 10 guests
You sail on a Luxury phinisi — a traditional two-masted wooden sailing boat refitted with ensuite cabins, a chef's galley and a shaded deck lounge. It is yours alone: your boat, your route, your pace. The crew adjusts each day to the wind, the tide and your mood, and anchors at night in quiet bays rather than crowded moorings.

The itinerary

  1. Day 1

Labuan Bajo to Kelor and Kalong

We collect you from your hotel or the airport and board at Labuan Bajo harbour by late morning. The crew casts off while lunch is served on deck. First stop is Kelor, a tiny islet with a short, steep climb and clear water for a first snorkel — a good way to shake off the flight. As the light softens we anchor off Kalong Island, where thousands of flying foxes lift off at dusk and stream across a pastel horizon. Dinner at anchor, in a bay to yourselves.

  2. Day 2

Padar at sunrise, Pink Beach, the dragons of Loh Liang

An early alarm, worth it. The 30–45 minute trek to Padar's saddle viewpoint climbs steep steps to a panorama of three curved bays — quietest at sunrise, which is why we anchor overnight nearby. Back on board for breakfast, then a slow morning at Pink Beach, where crumbs of red organ-pipe coral turn the shoreline rose; the phinisi sits alone in the bay while you swim. In the afternoon a ranger leads you through the dry grass of Loh Liang on Komodo island. Most days the dragons are close to the station; the rangers know where they rest.

  3. Day 3

Manta Point, Taka Makassar and the sunset ridge

Morning is for the drift at Karang Makassar, better known as Manta Point: you slip into the current and let it carry you over the reef while the crew shadows you in the tender. Reef mantas come here to be cleaned — most reliably December to March, possible in any month. Lunch on Taka Makassar, a comma of white sand that barely counts as an island. Then we sail north to Gili Lawa Darat, climb the grassy ridge between two seas for sunset, and drop anchor beneath it for the night.

  4. Day 4

Northern pinnacles, then the empty south

If the sea allows, the morning starts over Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, the pinnacles of the north — snorkellers stay on the surface and watch the schooling fish turn below. Then we do what the day boats cannot: cross to the wilder south of the park, towards Loh Sera and the Manta Alley area, where the bays are empty and the hills come down bare to the water. The afternoon is unscripted — an empty beach, a second snorkel, or nothing at all from the deck lounge. Night at anchor, far from everyone.

  5. Day 5

Rangko Cave and the sail home

A last swim before breakfast, then we sail back towards Labuan Bajo with one stop left: Rangko Cave, a saltwater pool inside a limestone cave near Gorontalo village. Around midday, shafts of light drop through the roof and the water glows; you float in it almost alone. Lunch on deck as the crew brings the phinisi into harbour by mid-afternoon, in time for an onward flight or a night in town. We transfer you to the airport or your hotel — and the route we actually sailed will be yours, not a brochure's.
